Background

nCardio-Vascular Diseases represent a major public health problem in many countries including Egypt.

n

nThere are limited data about morbidity and mortality of CVD in Egypt

nThere is no national surveillance system of CVD in Egypt

Objective

To develop a national registry system of CVD which will allow to estimate the morbidity and mortality rates of CVD in Egypt

Methods

By developing Health Information System for Heart Disease (HISH) by registration procedure to collect the data from four Governerates through Monitoring Cardiovascular Disease Network Project (MCDN).

Data gathered

* Outpatients and inpatients through 1999 – 2000 were collected for 1781 patients

* Data entry program was developed in outpatient facilities through computer network for accurate registration

* Outpatient clinic and inpatients through 1999 – 2000

* Total collected cases = 1781 patients

Data include :

n# Identification.

n# Medical history.

n# Risk factors for CVD.

n# Clinical examinations.

n# Diagnosis according to International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) Revision

n# Treatment

Results:

*Mean age of total cases = 51.5 y ± 13.2

*Most frequent diagnosis was Hypertension= 768 (48.2%) and Chronic IHD= 340 (21.3%)

*Smoking represented 16% of cases.

Conclusion

vThe development of HISH  is a highly valuable tool for

v# Educational programs,

# Training programs and

# Decision making

Recommendations

Efforts and proper organization are needed To

# Implement HISH,

# Expand the system gradually to more health units and

# Support of regular field studies
